Retro-Commissioning Engineer

Employment Type: Full-Time | Exempt
Pay Range: $75,000 – $105,000
Schedule: 100% Onsite + Travel (50%)
Reports To: Vice President, IS Technical Services


Overview

Wheeler Staffing Partners is hiring a Retro-Commissioning Engineer  to join an Integrated Solutions project delivery team. This role serves as a technical authority in the development and successful implementation of energy conservation measures for retro-commissioning (RCx) projects. The Technical Services Engineer (TSE) will support all phases of the commissioning (Cx) process, collaborate with engineers of record to optimize systems, and provide mentorship to Technical Services staff.

The ideal candidate will bring a high level of expertise in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) design with an emphasis on building automation, energy management, and system optimization.


Responsibilities

Pre-Engineering

  • Provide technical assistance during data collection surveys.

Design and Pre-Construction

  • Lead site surveys to determine existing facility conditions and scope of work.

  • Develop energy conservation strategies and integrate them into overall project design.

  • Review RFPs, equipment, and service procurement documents.

  • Ensure compliance with engineering best practices, company standards, and applicable codes.

  • Review design submittals and conduct commissioning/peer reviews.

  • Advise project teams on technical and resource requirements.

Construction and Acceptance

  • Conduct site visits to review progress and installation quality.

  • Troubleshoot equipment/system installation and setup issues.

  • Provide technical support for project execution and system optimization.

Other Duties

  • Identify gaps in project execution and create process improvements.

  • Develop and implement standards, tools, and training materials for the Technical Services team.

  • Provide leadership, coaching, and mentoring to junior staff.

  • Prepare technical reports and deliver operations and maintenance training post-implementation.

  • Contribute to business decision-making while ensuring technical excellence and positive client experiences.


Qualifications

Required:

  • 6–10 years of experience in engineering design, energy management, or retro-commissioning.

  • Active Professional Mechanical Engineering (PE) license.

  • Strong technical expertise in energy and system optimization.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Proven leadership and mentoring ability.

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with attention to detail.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities.

Preferred:

  • Experience with Central Energy Plants (CEP), Healthcare, or Higher Education projects.

  • Chilled Water, Heating Water, Steam, and Tower Water system project experience.

  • Hydronic distribution system knowledge.

  • Background in building automation, controls, and systems integration.

  • Test and Balance or Energy Management project experience.

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and REVIT.


Travel Requirements

  • 50% travel to project sites and office locations is required.


Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Combination of office and field work.

  • Exposure to outdoor conditions, noise, and confined spaces during site surveys.

  • Use of ladders for equipment inspections above ceilings.

  • Ability to lift, move, or adjust objects weighing 20–100 pounds.
