Job Description
Job Title: Mechanical Engineer (PE I, II, or III)
Location: Tempe, AZ; Charlotte, NC; Chicago, IL; Philadelphia, PA (Relocation Available)
Employment Type: Direct Hire | Full-Time
Work Arrangement: Primarily Onsite (flexibility available)
Travel: Up to 10% (local, reimbursed)
Compensation:
- PE I: $115,000 – $130,000 + annual bonus
- PE II: $130,000 – $145,000 + annual bonus
- PE III: $145,000 – $160,000 + annual bonus
Position Overview
Wheeler Staffing Partners is seeking a Mechanical Engineer (PE I, II, or III) to support the design and development of mechanical systems across healthcare, higher education, and MEP infrastructure projects. This role involves hands-on design, engineering analysis, and project execution, with the opportunity to grow into a leadership/management position.
The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise in HVAC and mechanical systems, proficiency in Revit, and experience designing central plants, ductwork, and related systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop mechanical systems including HVAC, chillers, boilers, ductwork, and control systems
- Prepare and review engineering drawings, specifications, and blueprints using Revit
- Analyze, evaluate, and optimize system performance and energy efficiency
- Support central plant and MEP infrastructure design projects
- Perform site visits and field assessments as needed
- Sign and seal engineering documents (as applicable based on licensure)
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, project managers, and clients
- Support project lifecycle including planning, design, and execution
- Analyze utility data and perform lifecycle cost analyses
- Ensure compliance with industry standards, codes, and regulations
- Manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Level-Based Expectations
PE I (Entry-Level Professional Engineer)
- Apply standard engineering techniques under general supervision
- Handle moderately complex issues; escalate complex problems as needed
- Support project execution and documentation
PE II (Mid-Level Professional Engineer)
- Independently manage design components and project tasks
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers
- Contribute to project planning and client coordination
PE III (Senior-Level Professional Engineer)
- Lead complex projects and engineering initiatives
- Oversee design strategy and execution across multiple projects
- Mentor teams and support leadership development initiatives
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical or related field)
- Professional Engineer (PE) License required (Mechanical preferred; Electrical considered)
- Experience Requirements by Level:
- PE I: 3+ years
- PE II: 7+ years
- PE III: 10+ years
- Strong experience in mechanical engineering design and HVAC systems
- Proficiency in Revit and Microsoft Office (Excel required)
- Experience with chillers, boilers, ductwork, and central plant design
- Knowledge of energy savings projects and lifecycle cost analysis
- Ability to analyze utility data and system performance
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing healthcare and/or higher education facilities
- Experience with Central Energy Plant (CEP) infrastructure projects
- Knowledge of medium voltage systems and power distribution
- Experience with generator systems and backup power design
- Prior leadership or mentorship experience
