Non-QM Mortgage Underwriter
Location: Remote, USA
Employment Type: Full-Time
Salary: $85,000 – $90,000 annually + Overtime Eligibility + Bonus Structure Based on Loan Volume
Position Overview
Wheeler Staffing Partners is seeking an experienced Non-QM Mortgage Underwriter for a fully remote opportunity supporting residential mortgage underwriting operations nationwide. This role is responsible for underwriting Non-QM loan files while ensuring compliance with investor, agency, and internal underwriting guidelines.
The ideal candidate will have recent Non-QM underwriting experience, strong analytical skills, current experience using Encompass, and the ability to manage a consistent underwriting pipeline in a fast-paced production environment.
Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities include reviewing residential mortgage loan files for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with investor and internal underwriting guidelines. The Underwriter will evaluate credit packages, appraisals, income documentation, title commitments, and supporting loan documentation while ensuring all conditions are satisfied prior to closing.
Additional responsibilities include:

Reviewing and analyzing personal and business tax returns for income qualification

Communicating underwriting decisions and conditions verbally and in writing

Identifying inconsistencies, red flags, or potential fraud indicators within loan files

Working with Loan Originators to restructure loans into salable packages when necessary

Partnering with Processing and Closing teams to ensure underwriting conditions are met prior to funding

Communicating with investors and agencies to resolve underwriting questions or guideline clarifications

Managing daily underwriting pipeline volume while maintaining production and quality standards

Remaining current on investor overlays, agency guidelines, and regulatory requirements

Supporting underwriting operations within a paperless workflow environment
Required Qualifications

Minimum of 2 years of recent Non-QM underwriting experience required

Current hands-on experience using Encompass required

Minimum of 5 years of overall mortgage underwriting experience preferred

Strong knowledge of Non-QM loan products and underwriting guidelines

Experience underwriting loan amounts typically ranging from $150,000 – $600,000

Strong understanding of investor and agency underwriting guidelines

Experience reviewing personal and business tax returns for income analysis

Experience reviewing appraisals, title commitments, and supporting credit documentation

Ability to identify inconsistencies and potential fraud indicators within loan files

Experience working within a paperless underwriting environment

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain production expectations in a high-volume environment

Must be authorized to work in the United States
Preferred Qualifications

Prior full-time remote underwriting experience preferred

Experience supporting high-growth mortgage operations environments

Strong collaboration skills when partnering with processors, closers, and loan originators

Candidates located within EST or CST time zones preferred
Work Environment
This is a fully remote opportunity open to candidates located anywhere in the United States, with preference given to candidates located within Eastern or Central time zones. The environment is fast-paced, production-driven, and focused on maintaining quality underwriting standards while supporting high loan volume.
Employees are eligible for overtime pay and performance-based bonus opportunities tied to loan volume.
