Mortgage Underwriter (DE Required)
Location: Remote, USA
Employment Type: Full-Time
Work Arrangement: Fully Remote
Salary: $85,000 – $90,000 annually + Overtime Eligibility + Bonus Structure Based on Loan Volume
Average Loan Amounts: $150,000 – $600,000

Position Overview

Wheeler Staffing Partners is seeking an experienced Mortgage Underwriter for a fully remote opportunity supporting residential mortgage underwriting operations nationwide. This role is responsible for underwriting Conventional and FHA loan files while ensuring compliance with investor, agency, and internal underwriting guidelines.

The ideal candidate will have recent underwriting experience, active DE certification, strong analytical capabilities, and the ability to manage a consistent underwriting pipeline in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Underwrite residential mortgage loan files in accordance with investor and government agency guidelines
  • Review loan credit packages, appraisals, income documentation, and supporting loan documentation for completeness and compliance
  • Analyze and calculate borrower income using personal and business tax returns
  • Review and evaluate appraisals, title commitments, credit reports, and asset documentation
  • Communicate underwriting decisions and loan conditions verbally and in writing to appropriate internal stakeholders
  • Identify inconsistencies, red flags, or potential fraud indicators within loan files
  • Work closely with Loan Originators to restructure loans into salable packages when necessary
  • Partner with Processing and Closing teams to ensure underwriting conditions are satisfied prior to closing
  • Review and clear underwriting conditions in a timely manner
  • Maintain knowledge of current investor overlays, agency guidelines, regulatory requirements, and underwriting policies
  • Communicate with private investors and government agencies to resolve underwriting questions or guideline clarifications
  • Manage daily underwriting pipeline volume while maintaining quality and compliance standards
  • Support underwriting operations within a paperless workflow environment

Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of 5 years of recent mortgage underwriting experience required
  • Recent experience underwriting Conventional and FHA loans required
  • Active DE (Direct Endorsement) certification required
  • VA underwriting experience or designation is a plus
  • Experience underwriting loan amounts typically ranging from $150,000 – $600,000
  • Strong understanding of investor and government agency underwriting guidelines
  • Experience reviewing personal and business tax returns for income analysis
  • Experience reviewing appraisals, title commitments, and supporting credit documentation
  • Ability to identify potential fraud indicators and documentation inconsistencies
  • Experience working within a paperless underwriting environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain production expectations in a high-volume environment
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience using Encompass preferred
  • Prior full-time remote underwriting experience preferred
  • Experience supporting high-growth mortgage operations environments
  • Strong collaboration skills when partnering with processors, closers, and loan originators
