Job Title: Mechanical Engineer (PE II or III)
Location: Tempe, AZ; Charlotte, NC; Chicago, IL; Philadelphia, PA; Salt Lake City, UT (Relocation Available)
Employment Type: Direct Hire | Full-Time
Work Arrangement: Primarily Onsite (flexibility available)
Travel: Up to 10% (local, reimbursed)
Compensation: $130,000 - $175,000 (depending on PE and experience level). 
  • Discretionary yearly bonus and monthly phone allowance ($80/month).
Position Overview Wheeler Staffing Partners is seeking a Mechanical Engineer (PE II or III) to support the design and development of mechanical systems across healthcare, higher education, and MEP infrastructure projects. This role involves hands-on design, engineering analysis, and project execution, with the opportunity to grow into a leadership/management position.
The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise in HVAC and mechanical systems, proficiency in Revit, and experience designing central plants, ductwork, and related systems.
Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop mechanical systems including HVAC, chillers, boilers, ductwork, and control systems
  • Prepare and review engineering drawings, specifications, and blueprints using Revit
  • Analyze, evaluate, and optimize system performance and energy efficiency
  • Support central plant and MEP infrastructure design projects
  • Perform site visits and field assessments as needed
  • Sign and seal engineering documents (as applicable based on licensure)
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, project managers, and clients
  • Support project lifecycle including planning, design, and execution
  • Analyze utility data and perform lifecycle cost analyses
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, codes, and regulations
  • Manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment

Level-Based Expectations PE II (Mid-Level Professional Engineer)
  • Independently manage design components and project tasks
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers
  • Contribute to project planning and client coordination
PE III (Senior-Level Professional Engineer)
  • Lead complex projects and engineering initiatives
  • Oversee design strategy and execution across multiple projects
  • Mentor teams and support leadership development initiatives

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical or related field)
  • Mechanical Professional Engineer (PE) License required
  • 6-8+ years of experience in mechanical engineering design and HVAC systems
  • Proficiency in Revit and Microsoft Office (Excel required)
  • Experience with chillers, boilers, ductwork, and central plant design
  • Knowledge of energy savings projects and lifecycle cost analysis
  • Ability to analyze utility data and system performance
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience designing healthcare and/or higher education facilities
  • Experience with Central Energy Plant (CEP) infrastructure projects
  • Knowledge of medium voltage systems and power distribution
  • Experience with generator systems and backup power design
  • Prior leadership or mentorship experience
