Job Title: Engineering Director
Location: Orlando, FL or Salt Lake City, UT (Relocation Assistance Available)
Employment Type: Full-Time | Direct Hire
Work Arrangement: Primarily Onsite (Flexibility Available)
Schedule: Monday–Friday
Travel: Approximately 30% regional travel (reimbursed)
Compensation: $130,000–$160,000 annually (DOE)
Additional Compensation: Discretionary annual bonus and $80/month phone allowance
Position Overview
Wheeler Staffing Partners is seeking an experienced Engineering Director to lead MEP engineering design and commissioning operations for a growing organization. This senior leadership role is responsible for overseeing multidisciplinary engineering and commissioning teams, ensuring successful project delivery, reviewing and approving technical designs, developing strong client relationships, and driving business development efforts within the commercial construction industry.
The ideal candidate brings extensive MEP design engineering experience, a proven track record of leading design engineering teams, and demonstrated success supporting large commercial projects. This individual will combine technical expertise with strong business acumen to grow existing accounts, develop new business opportunities, and maintain long-term client partnerships.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering & Technical Leadership

Lead engineering design and commissioning teams responsible for delivering large-scale commercial projects that meet client requirements, quality standards, budgets, and schedules.

Direct Project Managers, Engineers, Commissioning Agents, Commissioning Technicians, and other technical staff.

Review and approve MEP engineering designs, commissioning plans, specifications, calculations, and technical documentation for accuracy, quality, and compliance.

Provide technical oversight throughout the project lifecycle and ensure adherence to applicable codes, engineering standards, and client requirements.

Assign projects and resources based on team expertise, workload, schedules, and project requirements.

Ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and in accordance with established quality standards.
Team Leadership & Development

Lead, mentor, and develop engineering and commissioning professionals across multiple concurrent projects.

Provide coaching, performance management, and technical guidance to engineering leadership and staff.

Establish clear expectations for project execution, technical quality, accountability, and client service.

Support the continued development of engineering talent and build high-performing technical teams.
Business Development & Client Relationships

Develop new business opportunities within the MEP commercial construction market.

Grow existing client accounts by identifying additional project opportunities and expanding relationships.

Establish and maintain strong, long-term relationships with clients, vendors, and key industry stakeholders.

Participate in client presentations, proposal development, project pursuits, and marketing initiatives.

Partner with organizational leadership to identify growth opportunities and support business development strategies.

Serve as a senior technical resource during client meetings, project discussions, and business development activities.
Project & Operational Management

Oversee multiple engineering design and commissioning projects simultaneously.

Monitor project performance, budgets, schedules, staffing requirements, and technical deliverables.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve operational processes and project execution.

Identify opportunities for continuous improvement, increased efficiency, and business growth.

Support strategic planning and resource allocation across engineering and commissioning operations.
Required Qualifications
-
Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related discipline.
-
Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
-
PMI Project Management certification required.
-
10+ years of MEP design engineering experience.
-
5+ years of leadership experience managing design engineering teams.

Demonstrated experience reviewing and approving technical engineering designs for large commercial projects.

Proven business development success within the MEP commercial construction industry, including developing new business, growing existing accounts, and establishing and maintaining client relationships.

Experience leading engineering and commissioning teams across multiple concurrent projects.

Strong knowledge of MEP engineering design, commissioning processes, project management, commercial construction, and building systems.

Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Microsoft Project.

Excellent leadership, organizational, and decision-making skills.

Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively present to clients and executive leadership.

Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Strong attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality technical work.
Preferred Qualifications
-
MEP design engineering experience supporting large-scale healthcare and/or higher education projects.

Established industry relationships within the commercial MEP or construction market.

Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams across complex commercial building projects.

Experience combining technical engineering leadership with client development and account growth responsibilities.
