Energy Engineer (Professional Engineer I, II, or III) – Mechanical or Electrical PE Required
Location: Dallas, TX (Relocation Assistance Available)
Employment Type: Full-Time | Exempt | Onsite with Travel
Travel: 5–10% within Texas
Compensation by Level:

PE I: $90,000 – $118,000 + discretionary annual bonus
-
PE II: $118,000 – $136,000 + discretionary annual bonus
-
PE III: $136,000 – $156,000 + discretionary annual bonus

Position Overview
Wheeler Staffing Partners is seeking a licensed Professional Engineer (PE I, II, or III) to support energy engineering, optimization, and performance initiatives across commercial facilities. This role focuses on analyzing and improving energy performance, supporting energy efficiency projects, and providing engineering expertise related to HVAC systems, central plants, and building energy systems.
The Energy Engineer will work closely with clients, engineers, and project teams to evaluate energy usage, identify efficiency opportunities, perform engineering analyses, and support implementation and verification of energy-saving initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Analysis and Project Support

Apply engineering principles to analyze, design, and optimize building energy systems
-
Evaluate energy consumption and identify opportunities for operational and efficiency improvements
-
Design and draft engineering documentation, calculations, and technical reports
-
Support engineering projects from initial analysis through implementation and verification
-
Collaborate with engineers, contractors, and clients to support project execution
Energy Procurement and Utility Analytics
-
Collect, compile, and analyze utility consumption data and rate structures
-
Identify utility procurement opportunities, incentives, and rebate programs
-
Conduct utility bill analysis, verify accuracy, and resolve discrepancies
-
Perform energy benchmarking using tools such as EPA ENERGY STAR
-
Develop utility budgets and forecast energy costs
Energy Auditing and Facility Assessments
-
Conduct site surveys and analyze facility mechanical and electrical systems
-
Evaluate HVAC, hydronic, and central plant systems performance
-
Identify energy conservation measures and cost reduction opportunities
-
Develop technical reports outlining findings and recommendations
Measurement and Verification (M&V)
-
Develop and implement Measurement and Verification (M&V) plans in accordance with IPMVP standards
-
Establish energy consumption baselines using regression and statistical analysis
-
Verify energy savings and system performance improvements
-
Review design documents, metering systems, and specifications to ensure compliance
-
Create dashboards and reports to monitor ongoing energy performance
Energy Modeling and Economic Analysis
-
Develop energy models to simulate building and system performance
-
Conduct life cycle cost analyses and engineering economic evaluations
-
Support project decision-making through engineering analysis and modeling
-
Document engineering methodologies and calculations
Monitoring, Reporting, and Optimization
-
Monitor building automation systems and energy performance data
-
Identify operational issues impacting energy efficiency and system performance
-
Develop recommendations to optimize building performance and reduce energy consumption
-
Prepare reports and communicate findings to clients and project stakeholders
Team Collaboration and Leadership
-
Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering and project teams
-
Mentor and support junior engineers and energy analysts as needed
-
Communicate technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
-
Support continuous improvement and innovation initiatives
Required Qualifications
Education:
-
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required
Licensure:
-
Active Professional Engineer (PE) license required
-
Mechanical PE preferred; Electrical PE accepted
Experience:
-
PE I: Minimum 3+ years of relevant engineering experience
-
PE II: Minimum 7+ years of relevant engineering experience
-
PE III: Minimum 10+ years of relevant engineering experience
-
Experience in one or more of the following areas:
-
Energy engineering or energy management
-
Retro-commissioning or commissioning
-
HVAC or mechanical systems engineering
-
Utility data analysis and energy performance evaluation
-
Technical Skills and Competencies:
-
Strong knowledge of commercial HVAC and building energy systems
-
Experience with life cycle cost analysis and energy modeling
-
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical skills
-
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
-
Strong written and verbal communication skills
-
Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities
Preferred Qualifications
-
Experience with Central Energy Plants (CEP)
-
Healthcare or higher education facility project experience
-
Experience with chilled water, steam, and hydronic systems
-
Experience with building automation systems and controls
-
Experience with retro-commissioning and energy efficiency projects
-
Familiarity with AutoCAD and REVIT
Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Combination of office and field-based work

Exposure to active mechanical and equipment environments
Physical Requirements:

Ability to walk, climb stairs, and access mechanical systems

Ability to travel to project sites as needed (5–10%)

Ability to lift or move objects up to 50 pounds occasionally

Ability to work in indoor and outdoor environments
